How to Monitor IoT Devices

View real-time connection status, signal quality, and last message times for all your IoT devices from a centralized dashboard.

Quick Summary

Click the Settings gear, select IoT Management to see all connected devices. Green status = online, yellow = stale, red = offline. Click any device for detailed data.

Before You Begin

Requirements
  • You must have IoT devices registered with an Integration Service
  • Devices must have sent at least one uplink message
  • Your subscription must include IoT device access

Accessing IoT Management

  1. Click the Settings gear icon in the sidebar
  2. Select IoT Management from the dropdown
  3. You'll see a table of all IoT devices in your organization

Understanding the Device List

Table Columns

Searching and Filtering

Search Devices

Use the search bar to find devices by:

  • Device name
  • DevEUI / UUID
  • Location name

Refresh Data

Click the Refresh button to reload the device list and get the latest status.

Opening Device Details

Click on any device name to open the detailed view with three tabs:

Data Overview Tab

  • Current Values: Real-time sensor readings
  • Downlink Actions: Send commands to the device
  • Property History: Historical data charts
  • Associated Assets: Linked physical equipment

Asset Details Tab

  • Location and Asset Type
  • Serial number, model, manufacturer
  • Purchase date and warranty status
  • Keep-alive configuration
  • Full message history
  • Raw payload data
  • Timestamps and signal data

Real-World Examples

Example 1: Check Server Room Temperature Sensors

Situation: You need to verify all temperature sensors in the data center are online.

Solution:

  1. Go to IoT Management
  2. Search for "Server Room" or "Temperature"
  3. Check the CS column for each sensor
  4. Green = good, Yellow/Red = investigate

Result: You quickly identify that Sensor #3 is showing yellow (stale). You check and find it needs a battery replacement.

Example 2: Investigate Poor Signal Quality

Situation: A sensor is showing only 1 bar signal quality and intermittent data.

Solution:

  1. Find the device in IoT Management
  2. Note the SQI showing 1 bar (poor)
  3. Click to open device details
  4. Check Asset Details tab for location
  5. Visit the physical location and consider:
    • Moving the sensor closer to a gateway
    • Adding a gateway to improve coverage
    • Checking for interference sources

Result: You move the sensor 10 meters closer to the gateway, and signal improves to 3 bars.

Example 3: Find Offline Cold Storage Sensors

Situation: You need to ensure all cold storage sensors are reporting for compliance.

Solution:

  1. Go to IoT Management
  2. Search for "Cold Storage"
  3. Sort by CS (Connection Status)
  4. Look for any red (offline) indicators
  5. For offline devices:
    • Check Last Message time
    • Verify device has power
    • Check Integration Service connectivity

Result: You find two sensors offline due to a gateway issue. After restarting the gateway, all sensors come back online.

Example 4: Monitor Multiple Sites

Situation: You manage IoT devices across 5 buildings and need a quick health check.

Solution:

  1. Go to IoT Management
  2. Review the full device list (paginate if needed)
  3. Focus on CS column for any non-green indicators
  4. Click yellow/red devices to investigate
  5. Check Last Message for patterns (all offline = gateway issue)

Result: Daily 2-minute check catches issues before they impact operations.

Keep-Alive Configuration

The Keep-Alive setting determines when a device is marked offline:

Device Report IntervalRecommended Keep-Alive
Every 5 minutes15-20 minutes
Every 15 minutes30-45 minutes
Every hour2-3 hours
Every 6 hours12 hours
tip

Set keep-alive to 2-3x your device's reporting interval to avoid false offline alerts.

To change keep-alive:

  1. Go to Assets > find the device
  2. Click Edit
  3. Update the Active Timeout field
  4. Save
